Following Production Processes P3 (d)

Planning Process

Choosing the audio was a reasonably tough decision, I wished to create a well paced, interesting music video that could include many different filming and editing techniques. I chose 'Livin' In The City' as I felt there was a strong storyline that could be portrayed through the music video, and the song has diverse sections that could be divided into different areas of filming, allowing me to have two pieces of film running coherently, including the initial narrative, as well as the band playing the song.

The planning process was one of the most crucial parts of the whole production, interpreting the song and creating a new concept idea for a music video was the most challenging factor of the overall production. Beginning with the interpretation of the script, thinking up ideas that would convey the storyline within the song was vital, this gave me the initial script for the music video, helping me produce ideas, as well as think of filming techniques and styles to use within the final production.

Extract from Concept

'The video will be focussed on one individual, a city worker. Throughout the video we will see the male complete his daily routines within the city.'

'It will begin with an individual playing guitar, in a dream state, the audio will be slightly distorted, as if you can hear it through a radio, and as lyrics begin the dream will fade into the male’s bedroom with a medium close up as he wakes, it will then zoom out as he begins to get ready for the day.'

All the images above portray the initial concept of my music video, they match the description of showing the individual waking up and going about his daily routine.

How To Achieve The Final Product

After establishing my initial ideas, I then began planning developing a thorough plan that would eventually allow me to create a high quality music video. The planning stages were essential in the success of my music video, helping me identify the ways in which I should present the theme, as well as constructing the foundational overview of my final production.

Storyboarding helped develop ideas and add further narrative to the storyline, which for the majority was a representation of the lyrics that would be heard on the audio, and due to the clear storyline presented with the audio, I was able to create a strong plan for a video that would strongly back up the audio. As well as this I analysed the lyrics to produce a script, which would be the base of my narrative. The annotations and comments made on the script put my concept into further detail, providing me with sufficient ideas to develop my music video into the next stages, which would be filming. Planning the shot list would provide me with step-by-step instructions on what I would be filming, in a particular order. These plans kept me organised which ensured the music video would of of high quality due thorough planning and organisation. Evidently improving the cinematography and narrative of the final product.

The recce was again a vital part of my production. Visiting locations and ensuring they are appropriate for the music video was crucial before actually proceeding with the filming. This is because failing to plan the specific locations could lead to poor footage due to disorganisation, as I could arrive at locations and find out it is unsuitable to film, thus having to relocate and jeopardise the quality of my final music video. As well as this, it helped instigate initial thoughts on the shots I would be taking, allowing me to plan camera angles, lighting and what footage would look good in different locations.

Mise-En-Scene was used throughout the music video the emphasise and create the theme of the music video. For the band and instrumental scenes, I ensured many different shots were taken with a variety of instruments, including many instruments shown in the same clip, and placing specific items associated with music in shots. Furthermore, the city and individual protagonist clips were filmed to present city life to the audience, hence I dressed the actor in a suit, and filmed a diverse range of city shots to give the audience an idea of what is it like 'Livin' in the City'.

Additionally I had to organise and select the most appropriate equipment to use for my music video shoot. After creating my shot life, I had an idea of what lenses I would require to create the most professional looking shots. Using a 50mm lens for many of my clips allowed me to create a 'human eye effect', giving the audience a true perspective of what is occurring on screen, keeping them engaged and involved with the music video.

Was The Initial Concept Achieved

I believe that my initial ideas and concept were presented and achieved through my final music video, following the narrative given by the lyrics, giving a well rounded, captivating round-up of what it is like 'livin' in the city'. Revealing the day in the life of a business man.
